First produced in 1949, the Commander was a slightly shorter version of the 1911 model made with an aluminum alloy frame. The magazines for the Commander in .38 super and .45 ACP are interchangeable with magazines for the standard pistol. The 9mm uses a magazine with the same outside dimensions, but with a spine inserted to accommodate the shorter 9mm cartridge.
